Werewolf of London poster set to make $55,000 at Heritage Auctions

Posters for 1935's Werewolf of London are some of the rarest of the Universal horror series

An extremely rare poster for 1935's horror classic Werewolf of London is the lead lot in Heritage Auctions' Vintage Movie Posters Signature Auction, to be held on November 16-17 in Dallas.

Werewolf of London posterThe Werewolf of London was Universal's first werewolf film

Posters from the title are some of the rarest of the Universal horror series, with only a handfulof the insert format examples, such as this one, known to exist. It is expected to make between $35,000 and $55,000.

Werewolf of London was Universal's first foray into the werewolf genre, having already had success with The Mummy, Dracula and Frankenstein. To create the werewolf, the studio recruited master makeup artist Jack Pierce, whose finished work was considered too horrific and was "abbreviated" for the final cut.

The poster at Heritage displays signs of handling, with surface paper loss in the top and bottom left hand corner. It has a few small scuffs and light smudges, with small tears in the border. Nonetheless, it has been graded Fine +.

In July, the only known example of the Frankenstein insert poster sold for $262,000 at Heritage Auctions.

The second highest bids of the current auction are expected to be seen by the half sheet for 1932's Scarface, produced by Howard Hughes and directed by Howard Hawks. One of just three examples known to exist, this one has been excellently restored and will sell with a $25,000-50,000 estimate.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a fantastic selection of film memorabilia available in our online store.
