A rare Wemyss Ware sleeping pig topped a fine collection of the sought after Scottish pottery

A rare Wemyss Ware sleeping pig has seen outstanding bids as part of a large collection of Scottish pottery in Lyon & Turnbull's August 19 auction in Edinburgh.

Wemyss Ware sleeping pig The Queen Mother was known to have a fine collection of Wemyss Ware

The decorative pig sold for 10,000 ($15,597), alongside other Wemyss offerings: a buttercup tray brought 1,500 ($2,339), a large pig decorated with cabbage roses saw 1,100 ($1,715), and a cat made 1,400 ($2,183).

Wemyss Ware is highly collectible, with a stunning collection once owned by the Queen Mother. It was first produced by Robert Heron & Son in Kircaldy in the 1880s.

"Wemyss is a celebration of the finest in Scottish craft. It has been eagerly sought after by collectors since it first appeared in the late 19th century. This sleeping pig is extremely rare, I have only seen one of them before," said Lyon & Turnbull director, John Mackie.
