A rare Hogarth Press edition of American poet TS Eliot's The Waste Land auctions for charity

A very rare Hogarth Press edition of T S Eliot's seminal modernist poem The Waste Land has sold for 5,625 ($8,596) in the UK.

Hogarth Press The Waste Land The majority of Hogarth authors were members of the Woolf's Bloomsbury circle

The book, which dates from 1923, was published by Hogarth Press - a small scale publishing venture established by author Virginia Woolf and her husband Leonard.

It is believed that Woolf hand-set the type used in the volume, of which only 460 copies were ever produced.

The book was donated to Oxfam's Turl Street Branch in Oxford by Colin Cohen, who was given the book by a relative.

Other donations that were sold at the Oxfam auction in association with Bonhams include a collection of etchings of ancient and modern Rome by Guiseppe Vasi and a drawing of a naked man by author Mervyn Peake, which made 5,250 ($8,024) and 2,375 ($3,630), respectively.
