Vintage Steelmaster File Cabinets
Vintage Steelmaster file cabinets are original cabinets produced by the American office goods manufacturer Art Steel Company.
History & Description
A file cabinet – also known as a filing cabinet – is a type of office furniture consisting of a container, typically metal, that is used for keeping papers and documents in order.
During the mid-twentieth century, the Art Steel Company produced a range of file cabinets that were renowned as being some of the toughest and most practical office furniture on the market. Steelmaster file cabinets ranged from small, stackable cabinet boxes comprising of just one or two drawers,to larger and sturdier file cabinets.
Guide for collectors
Instances of vintage Art Steel Co. Steelmaster file cabinets sold through national auction houses are relatively uncommon. Moreover, prices can vary considerably. At present, one of the most expensive Steelmaster file cabinets sold at auction fetched $275 (see below). However, a similar file cabinet was sold through Macon Brothers Auctioneers in Walla Walla, Washington, on May 17th 2008 for just $5.
Vintage Steelmaster file cabinets can be purchased from websites such as eBay and Etsy or second-hand online classifieds, such as Gumtree. A few other websites that sell vintage file cabinets include; The Old Cinema, Scaramanga Shop and Lovely & Company.
Notable auction sales
On March 23rd 2003 at William J. Jenack Auctioneers in Chester, New York, a vintage Steelmaster file cabinet with assorted railroad photographs realised a price of $275.
On March 31st 2012, a vintage five-drawer Steelmaster file cabinet, circa 1940s, was sold on eBay for $40.
On April 15th 2012, a vintage two-drawer Steelmaster file cabinet, circa 1950s, was sold on eBay for $34.95.
On April 24th 2012, a vintage five-drawer Steelmaster file cabinet was sold on eBay for $28.30.
On February 29th 2012, a vintage Steelmaster index file cabinet was sold on eBay for $19.49.
