Vintage Dunhill cigarette lighters are refillable, metal lighters produced by the British-based company Alfred Dunhill Ltd.

History & Description

Alfred Dunhill Ltd. was founded in 1893 and initially produced products for the automobile market. Having retired in 1907, Alfred Dunhill opened an exclusive cigars | cigar]]] and tobacco store in London and began to produce his own patented brand of pipes.

Dunhill launched its first cigarette lighter, called Unique in 1927, and ever since their lighters have been synonymous with quality, reliability and innovation.

Dunhill’s subsequent lighter designs, such as the Tallboy, Squareboy and London Rollalite, were marketed as luxury goods and were favoured by celebrities such as Sean Connery and were regularly used in James Bond films.

In the 1950s, Dunhill produced one of the first butane gas lighters, the Rollagas.

Today, the company specialises in men’s luxury clothing, timepieces and writing implements and still produces top of the range cigarette lighters.

Guide for collectors

Due to their outstanding build-quality and the use of precious metals, in particular gold, vintage Dunhill cigarette lighters command some of the highest prices at auction for lighters.

Although vintage Dunhill lighters are frequently advertised on eBay, the most distinguished examples are typically sold at both national and international auction houses. For example, a rare silver plated petrol cigarette lighter realised a price of £7, 475 when it was sold through Christie’s in London on May 5th 1999.
