The final price for the camera was much lower than expected, after eBay forced photographer Jimmy Wixtrom to remove theoriginal listing as it did not meet its regulations for a charity auction. A new listing was set-up, which extended the closing date of the sale and conformed to eBay's demands.

The proceeds from the sale were to benefit the Swedish Cancer Society and Bolt's own education charity, The Usain Bolt Foundation, in Jamaica. Before the original listing was removed, the camera had already seen bids in excess of $11,000. A Nikon D4 usually costs in the region of $7,500.

Usain Bolt grabbed the Nikon D4 from Wixtrom following his astonishing 200m final win at London 2012, using it to photograph his teammates before turning it on the thousands of spectators at the event, as well as the photographers themselves. The photographs that Bolt took have since been published across the internet, becoming some of the most iconic shots from this year's Olympics.

Before handing the camera back to the Swedish photographer, who was then working for the country's Aftonbladet newspaper, Bolt scratched "Bolt #1" into its body using a nail. Wixtrom decided to auction the camera after his girlfriend's father passed away from cancer and his brother recently recovered from the disease.

Paul Fraser Collectibles is currently offering a signed photograph of Usain Bolt, which shows the star following his legendary 2008 win at the Beijing Olympics.
