US Colonial maps and other works to sell online

Early maps of America will auction with works by the likes of Antonia Do Solis, later this month

Five-hundred examples of Colonial and US history, maritime exploration and overland emigration maps of America and historic prints will be auctioned by PBA Galleries on January 21.

A highlight in the collection of antique cartography is from the 17th century: a first edition of Historia Conquista de Mexico by Antonio de Solis, the Spanish historian, dramatist, statesman and King Philip VI's private secretary.

First published in Madrid in 1684, it is regarded as Solis's most important work. Measuring 10 by 7 inches and bound in red morocco, the book is estimated at $4,000-6,000.

Jodocus Hondius Jr's map of Virginia, updated by Willem Blaeu ($3-5k)

Also selling is a 17th century map which made Europeans aware of the early settlement of America: Willem Blaeu's reissue of Jodocus Hondius Jr's map of Virginia.

Blaeu's version of the map, possibly printed as late as 1655, was originally published in 1640; a more attractively engraved version of Hondius Jr's original.

Measuring 15 inches by 19 inches, it will carry a $3,000-5,000 estimate.

Online bidding will be available through Live Auctioneers.
