'Unknown' 1922 Malta stamp auctions for $1,490

A previously unknown 1922 Malta 10 shilling stamp has sold in the UK

A previously unknown 1922 Malta King George V 10 shilling stamp has sold for 949 ($1,490) at a postage stamp auction in the UK.

Malta 10 shilling stampAt least 60 examples were printed

The mint condition offering bears a reversed watermark of a crown and "CC", allied with a "Self-Government" overprint.

It had been given a valuation of 1,000 ($1,601) ahead of the February 6 sale.

Colin Such, the auction house's director, explained prior to the auction that while the same stamp, without the overprint, is known with the reversed watermark, this is the first recorded example of the"Self-Government" overprintto appear in conjunction with the reversed watermark.

"This means at least one sheet of 60 existed at the time of the overprint," Such explained, adding: "How many more have survived unnoticed in stamp collections?"
