Ultra-rare $3.5m Ferrari sets the pace at RM's Amelia Island Auction

The auctioneers hold their annual event next month, with a whole host of venerable vehicles available

On March 12, leading American car auctioneer RM Auctions will be staging its annual Amelia Island sale of vintage and classic cars. The event is massively anticipated each year and is a must for all serious collectors of and investors in classic cars.

There are several wonderful and highly valuable vehicles on offer. The headline lot is without doubt a 1952 Ferrari 340 Mexico Coupe. It is one of only three built and hasimpeccable provenance. The car raced in the famous Mille Miglia, and came third in the 1952 La Carrera Panamericana - the most dangerous road race in the world.

The body was created by the legendary coachbuilder Vignale and it still has its original V-12 engine. This fantastic collectible model is very rare - and this is reflected in the sizeable estimate of $2.75-3.5m.

Also included in the auction is an historic 1930 Alfa Romeo 6C 1750 GS Spider, with Zagato bodywork. Around 2,600 Jano-designed 6C 1750 cars were created, and only a few of these were the super-charged 'GS' or 'Gran Sport' model offered here.

Another highlight is Lot 149 - a 1933 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Victoria by Rollston. A one-off design by Gordon Buehrig, it has a number of unique features including free-wheeling and automatic ride control.

Around 1935, this car was purchased by Bill Boyd - famous for portraying 'Hopalong Cassidy' in 66 films. Its celebrity provenance, plus its beauty and rarity, make it very collectible. It is expected to realise between $800,000 and $1.1m.

These are just a few of the fantastic motors up for sale next month. RM Auctions has established an excellent reputation for high-end and incredibly rare cars and motorbikes, with considerable success year after year. The upcoming sale could be the biggest yet.
