TS Eliot's Poems (1919) to cross the block at PBA Galleries

A Hogarth Press edition of TS Eliot's Poems (1919) is valued at $12,000

A first edition copy of TS Eliot's Poems (1919) is the headline lot of PBA Galleries' September 11 auction in San Francisco.

It was printed by the Hogarth Press in an edition of around 200 copies and carries an estimate of $8,000-12,000.

Poems Eliot The Hogarth Press was founded by Leonard and Virginia Woolf

Leonard and Virginia Woolf established The Hogarth Press London in 1917 after buying a hand press and setting it up in their dining room.

In June last year, a Hogarth Press edition of The Waste Land sold for 5,625 ($8,596) in an Oxfam charity auction in the UK.

We have this rare signed copy of Virginia Woolf's seminal Orlando: A Biography.

The sale will feature a wealth of materials from the collection of Michael Montfort, who became the unofficial photographer to American poet Charles Bukowski (1920-1994).

The two men met in Germany in the mid 1970s. Montfort told Salon Magazine in a 2000 interview: "I was scared shitless to meet the guy because of his image.

"I thought I'd never get out alive. So I brought a case of beer or wine, and that impressed him for the next 20 years."

The collection includes Montfort's own copies of various published anthologies of his photographs - including Bukowski: Photographs 1977-1991, which features a signature and doodle from Bukowski himself.

It's valued at $3,000-5,000.
