P Sescau, Photographe by Toulouse-Lautrec is valued at $70,000 ahead of the New York auction

A poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec titled P Sescau, Photographe will highlight a sale at Poster Auctions International in New York on January 12, valued at $60,000-70,000.

The piece is the only known example of a poster by Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) to feature a reference to the new medium of photography.

Sescau Toulouse Lautrec poster The poster was produced for Paul Sescau - a friend of Toulouse-Lautrec

Sescau was a close friend of Toulouse-Lautrec and an early photographer who popularised the cine-roman - an early form of film in which still images are accompanied by voice and music.

Sescau had a reputation for attempting to seduce his models, hence Toulouse-Lautrec's depiction of the woman in the red dress in mid-flight in addition to the priapic configuration of the cloth hiding the photographer.

An example sold for 34,850 ($68,376) at Christie's London in 2008.

Another poster by Toulouse-Lautrec, this time produced for thecabaret performerAristide Bruant, is valued at $50,000-60,000.

The piece advertisesBruant's appearance at the Eldorado on the Boulevard de Strasbourg in Paris, flipping an earlier design for Bruant's residency at the Ambassadeurs - a move that turned out to be something of a masterstroke as the public responded strongly to the now familiar design.

We have a collection of art and photography memorabilia available to purchase, including this letter by Pierre August Renoir - a contemporary of Tolouse-Lautrec.
