This dress is a stunning example of how the People's Princess could make even the simplest garment come to life. Worn at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival, Diana outshone even the brightest of stars at the show.

The Catherine Walker-designed gown, made from light blue silk chiffon, was also worn during a photo shoot with Terence Donovan in the same year. It sold at Julien's Auctions in 2011 for $132,000 - a 120% increase on its $60,000 estimate.

This elaborate "lilac wild" gown and its accompanying bolero were worn by Diana on the State Tour of India in 1992. Another piece designed by Catherine Walker, it was described by its maker as "in perfect keeping with India's cultural standards".

At a 2011 auction dedicated to the world's most fashionable princess, it sold for an impressive $350,000, making it the second most expensive Diana dress ever sold at auction.

  1. First royal appearance dress - 1981

The dress worn by Diana Spencer in her first official appearance with fianc Prince Charles is probably the most understated in our list. Nonetheless, it remains an important part of her legacy and encapsulates the moment she first caught the public's full attention.

However, Prince Charles was not so impressed. According to the auction house that sold the dress, he told his soon-to-be-wife that only people in mourning wear black.

Designed by Elizabeth Emanuel, who would go on to design her world famous wedding dress, the simple black gown sold for 192,000 in 2010.

  1. The Travolta dress - 1985

The dress she wore on that star studded night holds the record for the most expensive Diana dress ever sold at auction, after it made an impressive $800,000 in 2011.

The wedding of Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer is one that will be remembered throughout history. Overshadowing even the most recent royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, the marriage was dubbed the "wedding of the century".

Over $750m tuned in to watch the wedding on TV, making it undoubtedly the most iconic piece in the Princess' wardrobe.

Unfortunately, the dress itself will never come to auction. However, PFC Auctions, our sister company, is currently selling a magnificent collage with Elizabeth Emanuel's original designs, along with five fabric cut-offs from the elaborate gown - a superb way to remember perhaps the most romantic day in royal history.
