1) Che Guevara - $119,000

In 2007 a lock of hair from Cuban revolutionary Ernesto Che Guevara, which was taken from him by a CIA operative, was sold in 2007 by Heritage Auction Galleries to bookstore owner Bill Butler for $119,000. Mr Butler said he planned to display the hair at his bookstore in Texas.

2) Elvis Presley - $115,120

In November 2002 Elvis Presley’s locks were sold by his personal barber, Homer "Gill" Gilleland, for $115,120 to an anonymous buyer during an online auction held by MastroNet Inc., Oak Brook, Illinois, USA, on November 15, 2002.

3) John Lennon - $48,000

In December 2007 a lock of John Lennon’s hair sold at a Gorringes auction in London for $48,000. The hair, which was inside a copy of Lennon’s book ‘A Spaniard in the Works’, was sold by former Beatles hairdresser Betty Glasow who had been given the gift by Lennon during the 1960s. The book was signed “To Betty, Lots of Love and Hair, John Lennon xx.”

4) Justin Bieber - $40,668

2 March 2011 saw a lock of Justin Bieber's hair sell on eBay for $40,668. The winning bidder was online casino company GoldenPalace.com. The sale was held by TV star Ellen Degeneres following a request that all she wanted for her birthday was a lock of Justin Bieber's hair. The proceeds of the sale were donated to the charity /The Gentle Barn

5) Babe Ruth - $38,187

In 2007 a strand of baseball legend Babe Ruth’s hair was sold by Robert Edwards Auctions for $38,187. The hair, which was mounted with a letter from Ruth authenticating it himself, had been put up for sale with a reserve of a mere $1,000.
