Tom Huddlestone auctions hair for $10,500 in charity sale

The auction of Hull City star Tom Huddlestone's hair will raise funds for Cancer Research UK

Hull City star Tom Huddlestone has auctioned a lock of his hair for 6,300 ($10,348) for charity.

After netting in Tottenham's 3-3 draw with Arsenal in April 2011, Huddlestone made the brave decision to not cut his hair again until he next scored.

It took a year-and-a-half and a change of club until the midfielder got on the score sheet again - on Boxing Day 2013 in Hull's 6-0 victory over Fulham.

The celebrations that followed were memorable, with club physio Rob Price getting the scissors out on the touchline.

"When we planned the celebration, we all thought it would be a good laugh, but I'm not sure anybody spoke about what would happen to the piece of hair," 27-year-old Huddlestone explained.

"Thankfully the club picked it up on the day, and put it online for auction.

"It's raised an amazing amount of money, more than I could have imagined, and the generosity from everybody involved has been incredible."

The funds raised will go to Cancer Research UK.

The winning bidder, who remains unknown, will be joining a growing group of hair collectors around the world.

A popular pastime in the Victorian era, hair collecting is enjoying a resurgence, with values also escalating.

Locks from Babe Ruth have sold for $38,000 recently, while strands from Mick Jagger auctioned for 4,000 ($6,075) at Bonhams last year.
