Tintin comic strip sets new auction record of $3.4m with Artcurial

A piece of Tintin artwork has beaten the record for any comic book strip by 112%

Belgium's best-loved export, Tintin, has set a new world record for comic art sold at auction.

Tintin record art Tintin is the king of the comic book world, outselling the likes of Marvel and DC Comics

The magnificent work, showing Tintin in a variety of poses and disguises, was originally used as the inside cover illustration for several of Tintin's adventures between 1937 and 1958. It sold for an impressive $3.4m at Artcurial's Paris sale on May 24.

In doing so, the work beat the previous $1.6m record for comic art - held by the cover art for Tintin in America - by 112.4%.

Despite the popularity of American comic books, Herge's Tintin remains the most valuable, with prices far exceeding those seen for the likes of Marvel and DC Comics.

However, the entire market for comic art is booming at the moment, with the first appearance of Marvel's Wolverine setting a record for American comic book art at $657,250 with Heritage Auctions on May 16.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a wonderful selection of comic and illustration art for sale.
