Tiffany Wisteria table lamp will auction at Sotheby's on December 18

A Tiffany Wisteria table lamp is set to make $800,000 at the New York sale

A Wisteria table lamp by Tiffany Studios is valued at $800,000 ahead of Sotheby's Important Tiffany sale in New York on December 18.

The lamp dates to around 1905 and is one of the most significant designs by the company, with the shade featuring 2,000 individual pieces of hand-cut glass.

Each Tiffany lamp displays its own distinct colour variations, with this example featuring deep cobalt shot through with a rich sky blue.

Tiffany lamps were built entirely by hand, with production beginningin 1895. The price of a Wisteria lamp in 1906 was $400 - around $10,500 today.

Also featuring in the sale is a Tiffany Bat lamp, estimated to make $550,000-750,000.

Dating to 1905, the lamp features a patinated bronze frame decorated with bats, set with favrile mosaic, and leaded glass.

Bats rarely appeared in decorative art before the early 1900s, due to their association with the night and death - although they often appeared in funerary ornaments.

This change occurred, in part, due to the influence of Japanese art, where bats are depicted as symbols of happiness, and the animals came to be adopted by a number of glassmakers including Rene Lalique and Emile Galle.

A Steinway and Sons piano from the home of Louis Comfort Tiffany is valued at $200,000-300,000.

It features elaborate motifs including stars, palm and cypress trees, and was hand built for the designer in 1888.
