The Story of... Ardbeg Scotch whisky

Until last year, the Ardbeg distillery created the world's finest Scotch. Here is its amazing story

The latest edition of Jim Murray's definitive whisky tome, the Whisky Bible 2010, names a US whisky from the Buffalo Trace distillery as the best in the world.

When the story broke in December, 2009, it was big news - especially among Scotch Whisky manufacturers.

For the first time, Scotland was no longer the de facto source for the world's finest whiskies in the eyes of the industry's mostlistened-to expert.

Scotch had dominated Jim Murray's chart for the previous three years. And not just any Scotch, but one distilled by Ardbeg.

Nevertheless, Ardbeg Supernova still holds the #2 spot in Murray's heart.

And the Ardbeg Supernova - from the Hebridean island of Islay - remains the 'smokiest dram ever made,' according to some.

The above video takes a fascinating look at the story of the Ardbeg distillery, founded by the MacDougalls on Islay, in 1815.

As told by the peoplefrom the Ardbeg's nativeisland, the film charts the rise, the fall, and the triumphant return of Scotland's pre-eminent single malt makers.
