Letter signed Wellington by the Iron Duke

The Anglo-Irish soldier and statesman Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852) was one of the leading political and military figures of the 19th century. He was commissioned an ensign of the British Army in 1787 and was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Irish House of Commons.

He fought in the Napoleonic Wars and, after victory, served as the ambassador of France. It was at this time that he was granted a Dukedom. He was twice Prime Minister and remained commander-in-chief of the British Army until his death in 1852.

This one page, beautifully written letter measures 4.5x5.5 and is signed delicately in the bottom right corner as "Wellington". Wellington writes to a fellow Lord in his difficult-to-decipher hand, forwarding a letter which had been mistakenly delivered to the Duke that morning.

Matted with a black and white portrait of the Duke which also measures 4.5x5.5. Framed in a beautiful silver and gold bold plain frame. In excellent condition.
