Tangible assets help guard against currency fluctuations

With the Euro on the slide, investors in European stocks are turning to tangible assets

US investors with large unhedged holdings in the Eurozone have seen the value of their shares plummet in recent months.

The Euro has lost close to 7% of its value against the dollar in the past quarter.

The slide has far outweighed the 4.6% gain for stocks on Germany's DAX exchange, for example, during the same period.

In this climate, increasing numbers of US investors are looking to diversify their portfolios, with stocks in a variety of currencies.

Tangible assets also have a role to play as part of this diversification process.

We're talking asset classes such as coins, art, autographs, manuscripts, and rare postage stamps.

With an estimated 48m philatelists globally, fine stamps are tradable around the world, which ensures that investors can buy and sell when the market conditions are right for them.

And stamps don't come much finer than the 1910 2d Tyrian Plum.

In2007 a mounted mintexample wasvalued at65,000 ($102,230), according to the GB30 Rarities StampIndex. In 2011 the index now lists the stampat100,000 ($157,290).

That's an 8.99% pa rise in five years.

They rarely appear on the market. On December6thone of the 12 sold for 102,000 ($159,500) at auction in London.
