TAG Heuer resurrects its Silverstone at $6.5k

Based on the famous race circuit, the re-released 1974 watch is limited to just 1,500 pieces

One of the most coveted collector's timepieces from TAG Heuer, the Silverstone Chronograph, will be given a limited edition re-release in February 2010.

Originally issued in 1974, the Silverstone's hallmark will remain its cushion cut-shaped case, and a design which mixes square and round to emulate the curves of England's famous Silverstone racetrack.

Theresurrected wristwatchcontinues TAG Heuer's year-long celebration of its 150th birthday.

Upon its initial release, the Silverstone was the secondwatch to feature TAG Heuer's innovative patented water-proofing system, also used in its predecessor, the Monaco.

Thusly, the Silverstone, like the Monaco, features a distinct square chronograph case. Prior to TAG Heuer's patented design, watchmakers were only able to produce circular waterproofed cases.

Silverstone's designers made the watch's lines smoother than the Monaco, while retaining the innertechnology.

A key part of theMonaco and Silverstone's technology was the never-before-used Chronomatic Calibre 11: the first-ever self winding automatic chronograph with micro rotor. Thisprovided wearers with accurate timekeepingakin to professional chronometer instruments.

Before the Calibre 11, wearers had to constantly wind-up their timepieces to keep accurate time. The re-issued Silverstone features a modern update of the Calibre 11.

It also sports TAG Heuer's original brand logo, in celebration ofthe company'sbirthday and legacy.

In addition, stainless steel push buttons and curved, sapphire crystal with double anti-reflective treatment complete the watch's retro look.

The Silverstone is available with a brown or rich blue dial, anda matching perforated alligator strap.

It will be issued in a worldwide quantity of 1,500 examples per colour, and is expected to retail for around $6,500 - although this price will surely appreciate.
