Svedomsky stars in $4.9m Christie's Russian art auction

Returning with the Captives, the artist's signed canvas, sold for well above its high estimate

A sale of Russian art at Christie's New York achieved $4,912,500 last Friday (April 23). Seventy-four percent of the lots were sold by lot, 68% by value.

The sale's overall highlight emerged as Returning with the Captives by Alexander Svedomsky (1848-1911). Svedomsky's oil on canvas realised $170,500.

Measuring 82 by 55 inches, the canvas was sold by the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, US, to benefit its acquisition fund.

According the Christie's, the sale generated much interest among US and international collectors, with highly competitive bidding - especially for the collection of Faberg items on offer.

"The quality of these works created by the Russian artists escalated prices above pre-sale expectations," said Alexis de Tiesenhausen, International Head of Russian Art.

"The price achieved for the top lot of today's sale, Returning with the Captives by Alexander Svedomsky, was deserved for an exceptionally fine example of the artist's work."

Christie's next auction along this theme is scheduled to take place in June, promising an exceptional selection of works of art and Faberg, including rare works from a European Royal Family and the Nobel family.
