A 1719 Stradivarius Viola, only one of two privately owned ones in the world has failed to sell at a Sotheby's sealed-bid auction. With a minimum bid of $45 million, it would have immediately have become the most expensive instrument ever sold, had it found a buyer, the current record holder being a Stradivarius violin sold in 2011 for $15.9 million.

Embarrassing for Sotheby's? A big ask for sealed bids to start ABOVE the record price ever paid for a musical instrument.

Especially seeing as they were asking almost three times the current record- a good gambit if it works though!
