Steve Prefontaine autographs
Steve Prefontaine autographs are items signed by the late American long distance runner Steve Prefontaine (1951 - 1975).
Life and career
Prefontaine was an athlete whose personality and aggressive running style led him to national fame in the 1970s. He appeared on the cover of the magazine Sports Illustrated at the age of 19, and is credited as helping to promote the American running boom of the 1970s.
In 1971 he set the American record for the 5000m race, and finished fourth in the 1972 Olympics over the same distance. Whilst in training for the 1976 Olympics, he achieved and held the American record in each of the seven distance track events from the 2,000 meters to the 10,000 meters.
In May 1975 Prefontaine was killed in a tragic car accident in Oregon, at the age of just 25.
Prefontaine is a popular name for athletics autograph collectors, and his signature can sell for several hundred dollars. Simple signed cards can sell for up to $200, whilst items such as signed photographs and posters can reach more than $500.
