Steinway giltwood grand piano sells for $90,000 at Hindmann

A sumptuous giltwood grand piano created under Joseph Burr Tiffany marks Steinway's 50th

An opulent giltwood piano created to mark Steinway & Sons' 50th anniversary has sold with strong results as part of Leslie Hindmann Auctioneers' two-day Fine Furniture and Decorative Arts auction, held April 28-29 in Chicago.

The piano was created in 1904 under the command of Joseph Burr Tiffany, lead artist for Steinway's art case department and relative of Tiffany & Co's founder. Carved from solid mahogany and clad in 24 carat gold, it sold for $90,000.

On April 2, "Piano Man" Billy Joel auctioned his Steinway & Sons grand piano with a $60,000 estimate, hoping to raise funds for the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
