Steiff Harlequin teddy bear
Steiff Harlequin teddy bear is a red and blue mohair teddy bear manufactured by Steiff circa 1925. The Harlequin teddy bear is half red and half blue mohair. It has one blue and black and one brown and black glass eye. The bear has yellow stitching and yellow felt pads on all four paws.
It is thought that only one of these bears still exists, though it is possible that other, undiscovered examples may exist in private ownership.
The only example of the Steiff Harlequin teddy bear known to exist today was sold by Christie’s on 13 October 2010. It sold for £46,850.
The bear belonged to a woman who worked for Steiff for over 40 years, including 5 years during Margarete Steiff’s lifetime.
The lot notes from Christie’s for the item say that the bear is probably unique and was possibly an experimental piece.
The bear was in relatively good condition but with some damage. There was a small bald spot below its right ear, some fading to the blue mohair, a cracked blue and black eye, a patch to the right pad and some general wear.
