Steiff Happy teddy bears are collectible teddy bears, manufactured by Steiff in 1926.

Steiff

Steiff is a German plush toy manufacturer, founded by Margarete Steiff in 1880.

Margarete Steiff’s nephew, Richard Steiff, designed “Bear 55PB” in 1902, arguably the world’s first toy bear.

In 1903, Richard presented the bear at the Leipzig Toy Fair. US businessman Hermann Berg saw the bear and placed an order for 3,000, setting Steiff on its way to success that continues to this day.

Steiff Happy teddy bears

Steiff Happy teddy bears were originally produced in 1926, in both 40cm and 65cm sizes. The dual plush, tipped mohair bears are rare and highly sought after.

Unlike more recent versions of Steiff “Happy” bears, the original 1926 bears have a solemn expression.

How much are Steiff Happy teddy bears worth?

A 1926 40cm specimen sold for £101,556 at the Steiff Festival Geingen in 2002.

A 65cm 1926 variant achieved £55,000 at Sotheby’s in 1989.
