St George slays the whisky market

The English Whisky Company's first whisky has sold out within hours

Chapter 6, the English Whisky Company's first true whisky, has sold out within hours of the first 500 bottles hitting the shops.

The much anticipated tipple was the first aged long enough to count as a whisky, rather than a malted spirit, but Jim Murray of the Whisky Bible had already classed it as Brilliant in the 2010 book based on his previous tasting of the then immature version.

The Norfolk based company, with its St George distillery fulfilled a dream for father and son team James and Andrew Nelstrop. The family ran a barley farm, and always intended to make whisky, but until recently they merely sold the barley to Scots to do it north of the border.

The much admired spirit went on sale at 35 per bottle, and the Nelstrops hope to sell 45,000 bottles in 2010.
