Sports trading cards
Sports trading cards are a sub-category of trading card collectibles which feature sporting heroes, teams or related themes.
The hobby gained popularity throughout the 20th century, and continues to evolve to match and reflect changing sports and sports celebrities.
As the hobby has evolved, so too have measures to ensure that collectors can discern quality collectibles from fakes.
Organisations dedicated to this cause include PSA/DNA (Professional Sports Authenticator) among others.
Most valuable cards
Notable cards, in terms of value and historical significance, include:
- Golf - Tiger Woods 1996 Sports Illustrated For Kids PSA 10 is the most valuable golf card ever produced. It achieved $125,000 at auction in 2001
- Basketball - George Mikan 1948 Bowman PSA 10 is the most expensive basketball trading card ever sold. It achieved $218,500 in 2009
- Football – Bronko Nagurski 1935 National Chicle SGC 96 is the most expensive football trading card ever sold. It made $240,000 in 2006
- Hockey – Wayne Gretzky 1979 O-Pee-Chee PSA 10 made $80,000 in 2006, making it the most valuable hockey card ever sold
Most valuable trading card
Gretzky T206 Honus Wagner Baseball Card was sold in February 2007 for $2,350,000 – a record for a trading card.
