Morphy Auctions’ June 22nd-23rd sale of the George Moyer collection of fireworks and firecrackers went out with a bang.

Collector George Moyer’s explosive 40-year hobby amassed the largest collection of antique and vintage firework and firecracker memorabilia known to exist. It was auctioned off in 1,300 lots, many of these surpassing the $1,000 mark.

Unopened mint condition packs of rare firecrackers, alongside colourful and unique packaging were sought after by both firework enthusiasts and a selection of collectors of other disciplines, with an interest in the packaging images or company connected with each item. Packets with images of sci-fi, military themes, sports, pop culture, cowboys, clowns and Christmas presented a variety that crossed the boundaries of collecting genres and attracted a diverse range of collectors. Thus a package of ‘supercharged flashlight crackers’, depicting an early open-wheel Indy-style motor race got attention from petrol heads as well as gunpowder fans, racing to achieve $3,900.

The top sellers included rare salesman’s display boards, containing sample sparklers, caps, firecrackers and fireworks such as pinwheels and bombs. One of these sold for $7,200, and another for $4,800.

A packet of 32 Tally Ho! Firecrackers, picturing a British hunt, fetched $3,300, and a Greyhound pack with dog shooting across countryside doubled its high estimate, selling for $2,280. A Tung Fong 24-pack of Jackass Firecrackers from the Lucky Series is thought to be the only example in existence, and sold for $2,700 after an estimate of $500-$1,000. Likewise the Crax Boy Loudest Flashlight Crackers, thought to be the only remaining example, sold for $3,025.

Moyer’s own favourite and most sentimental pack ‘Marine’, a rare packet depicting US Marines in a battlefield, sold for $3,000. Merry-Go-Round also reached $3,000, and Three Feathers crackers with a Native American brave achieved $1,440.
