Sparkling gems at last jewellery auctions of 2012

Bonhams will hold their last two jewellery sales of the year on December 12 in New York, offering a range of fine and salon pieces to suit connoisseurs and collectors with all tastes and budgets.

The Fine Jewelery Sale will offer exquisite pieces from several private estates and eminent collections. Highlights include a Graff pear shaped diamond ‘solitaire’ ring, boasting a high grading for quality and colour, valued at $275,000-$350,000.

It will be accompanied by a yellow fancy coloured diamond ring estimated at $150,000-$2200,000, and a diamond and Ceylon star sapphire ring, estimated at $25,000-$35,000.

A rare Art Deco sapphire and diamond bracelet, circa 1925, created by renowned Art Deco designer Charles Jacqueau for Cartier is expected to sell here for $100,000-$150,000.

Van Cleef & Arpels pieces provide their own brand of elegance to the sale with several pieces, including a diamond, ruby and turquoise ballerina brooch, her face a pear-shaped rose-cut diamond, her tiara, skirt and bouquet studded with rubies. This 1943 piece is valued at $25,000-$45,000.

The antique offerings are headlined by a circa 1880 Parisian pearl and seed pearl diadem tiara, valued at $10,000-$15,000.

For those with the passion but not the purse to attend the morning auction, the Salon jewellery sale will continue into the afternoon, offering pieces to suit all price brackets. A diamond solitaire ring lacking the illustrious Graff name is available here with an estimate 100 times lower than that on offer in the morning sale.

A perfect opportunity to secure some last minute Christmas stocking fillers, the sale is sure to attract a wide audience of gift-givers and jewellery lovers alike.

Particularly notable is the fine selection of animal-themed brooches on offer. A gem-set elephant brooch by Rossie is offered at $1,000-$1,500, an enamel, diamond and green onyx lion brooch at $3,000-$5,000, a river pearl and diamond owl brooch by Ruser at $1,500-$2,500, and a diamond and gold squirrel brooch at $1,200-$1,800.
