Sotheby's S2 Banksy retrospective to feature works from across his career

Sotheby's retrospective of Banksy's work at London's S2 will open on June 11

Sotheby's will host the first unauthorised retrospective of works from street artist Banksy, curated by his former agent Steve Lazarides.

The free exhibition will run at Sotheby's S2 space in Mayfair, London between June 11 and July 25, with many of the works shown available to purchase.

Prices range from 4,000-500,000 ($6,704-838,057).

Lazarides admits that Banksy is unlikely to be delighted at the news, telling the BBC: "He'd hate it. He's never done an exhibition in a gallery, never done one in my gallery - even when we were working together.

"When he puts shows on it's been an event rather than an exhibition, the whole thing is a performance piece. This is just not something he would do."

Fru Tholstrup, director of the London wing of S2, commented: "Banksy is more than just a street artist - he is a true cultural phenomenon of our time.

"Although we all feel we know the images he's produced over the years, there's hardly ever been an opportunity to see together the full range of his best-known works."

Banksy has proven enormously popular among collectors in recent years, with sales figures rising steadily.

In February this year, his iconic Kissing Copppers made $575,000 in a sale at Fine Art Auctions Miami.

The record for his work was set at $1.8m for Keep it Spotless, a collaboration with contemporary artist Damien Hirst.
