Solid gold Lego brick breaks world record

A $14,500 solid gold Lego brick has become the most valuable Lego item in existence

Paul Fraser Collectibles,Sunday 16December 2012

Lego may not be known as a luxury brand, but between 1979 and 1981 the company annually rewarded long-serving employees by giving them a small number of solid gold Lego bricks.

When one of these bricks recently came to auction online, it sold after a flurry of bids for the record breaking figure of $14,449.99 - making it the most valuable Lego item in existence.

The 14 karat gold brick was offered in its original navy blue presentation case, which closely resembles a ring box, and is embellished across the inside cover with the Danish company'siconic logo.

Like every other Lego brick, the solid gold example is compatible with all other Lego merchandise. The brick is worth a great deal more than its gold value as it is extremely rare and unusual.

Only a handful were ever given out, meaning they are highly coveted by Legoand toy collectors. It weighs 25.65 grams and features eight of Lego's famous patented interlocking nodules.

Solid gold bricks were annually given out to two employees who had served at Lego for more than 25 years, as well as partners in the company. Not a great deal is known about the winning bidder, apart from the fact that he or sheis American.

Presumably, unlike most Lego sets bought this Christmas, the solid gold Lego brick will not be played with come Christmas morning. Here at Paul Fraser Collectibles we are currently offering 20% off all of our Christmas gift products.
