Signed Babe Ruth baseball hits $4.5k

One of America's greatest sports heroes made a surprise appearance at Cordier's auction

A number of unexpected and wonderful items cropped up at Cordier Antiques & Auctions' recent Two Day Fall Antiques & Fine Art Auction.

This Ruth signature is on the market, priced 7,500 ($12,375)

Featuring items consigned by multiple vendors, highlights included a signed document by the legendary Union Army soldier Joshua Chamberlain, and a $22k Fender Stratocaster guitar with a unique rock 'n' roll history...

Yet even more remarkable than these was another hidden gem: a memorabilia item linked to one of the greatest sports heroes in American culture.

A signed baseball bearing the autographs of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig featured in the sale.

It was reportedly obtained by the consignor's maternal grandfather who used to usher at Ebbets Fields.

The historic ball was signed at an exhibition game at Dexter Park - and the lucky buyer caught it for a bargain $4,500.

Cordier's auction was held in Pennsylvania, US.

It was certainly a great buy. Other Ruth autographs like this one (pictured), which is currently available on the market, can command prices up to 7,500 ($12,375).

Last year, Babe Ruth's 'most important bat' auctioned in the US, swinging towards an incredible final hammer price of $537,750.
