An autographed draft of Siegfried Sassoon's Joy Bells realised 5,250 ($8,382) at Bonhams' November 12 Books, Maps,Manuscripts and Historical Photographsauction in London.

The lot achieved a significant 250% increase on its estimate of 1,500 ($2,400).

It was written on November 23, 1917 - just days before Sassoon (1886-1967) left Craiglockhart, a military hospital where he had been sent in lieu of prison followingthe publication of hisprotest against the war.

During this time he met Wilfred Owen, a fellow war poet, with whom he struck up a friendship.

The poem attacks the Church of England for its jingoistic stance on the conflict.
