Sebastian Vettel's F1 helmet sees a record $118,000 at Bonhams

A signed F1 helmet worn by Sebastian Vettel sold to benefit Wings for Life charity

A signed F1 helmet that Sebastian Vettel wore at this year's Nurburgring Grand Prix has sold for charityat Bonhams, setting a new world record in the process.

Vettel wore the helmetas he secured his first home victory. It sold for an outstanding 72,100 ($118,015) on December 9, with profits to benefit spinal cord research charity Wings for Life. It is now the most valuable Formula 1 helmet sold at auction.

The helmet was joined by one worn by Formula 1 champion James Hunt during his world championship-winning year in 1976, which sold for 37,500 ($61,380). A helmet signed and worn by Mark Webber also featured, making 17,500 ($28,644).

Elsewhere in the auction was a 1960 Bentley S2 Continental "Flying Spur" saloon, which sold for 109,020 ($179,294).
