The Scream Inn board game is a vintage 1970s game based on the British comic strip ‘The Scream Inn’.

Background

The game is based on the comic strip of the same name, which was first published in the British horror comic Shiver and Shake. The title ran from 1973 until 1974, before being merged with ‘Whoopee’ which continued many of the comic’s characters and strips (including The Scream Inn).

The strip itself featured a haunted inn which offered a million pounds to anyone who could spend a night there. It had a staff of ghosts, described by the comic as:

"… the supernatural staff of spooks, ghouls, witches, zombies, devils & phantoms will strike terror into the stoutest heart.”

Despite the game sharing the name of the comic strip, it does not feature any of the characters themselves. It did, however, use the strip’s catchphrase on the cover of the box – “We’re only here for the fear.”

The Strawberry Fayre Scream Inn board game

The game was published in 1974 by the company Denys Fisher Toys under their Strawberry Fayre label. It features a partially three-dimensional board with cut-outs and a rotating disc beneath. When turned, a variety of ghosts and monsters would appear through slots in the playing board and could move around with each spin, appearing beneath player’s beds and floorboards.

The aim of the game is for players to escape from the inn and avoid being scared by the ghosts.

How much is a Scream Inn board game worth?

Due to the popularity of the comic strip during the 1970s the game is sought after by collectors. Copies in good condition with all their components intact can sell for between £30 and £70 on auction sites such as eBay.
