Schwinn Typhoon Bikes are bicycles produced by the American Schwinn Bicycle Company.

Brief history and description

The Schwinn Bicycle Company was founded in 1895, and achieved monopoly over the American bicycle market throughout much of the 20th century.

The Schwinn ‘Typhoon’ bicycle was manufactured by Schwinn in the mid 20th-century, and proved popular. Many of the models available to collectors today were manufactured in the late 1950s and throughout the 1960s, when they saw a peak in their popularity, though they have since found a renewed audience as treasured collectables.

Guide for collectors

Schwinn Typhoon bicycles are, like several other variants of the Schwinn make, very popular amongst collectors, though their market is a niche one. Collectors should expect to pay anything from $100 upwards for a genuine model.

The bikes are available at conventional, mainstream auctioneers, though their appearance there is rare. They are also available from specialist auctioneers, and at several online sources, such as eBay, where collectors may find rarer models at bargain prices.

As ever when purchasing online, if choosing this route collectors should endeavour to familiarize themselves with the design features of the Typhoon, so as to ensure their purchases are genuine.

If intending to use the bikes for their practical purpose, collectors should also be sure to find out if they are in working order so as to prevent further expense after their initial purchase.

SchwinnCruisers.com features several images of vintage Schwinn bicycles, and could thusly prove an invaluable resource for identifying these bikes.

Value

At the high end of the price spectrum, a 1968 metallic blue Schwinn Typhoon bicycle sold at auction for $350 at Neale and Sons on 12th November 2011.

The bikes generally sell for anywhere from $100-900, as evidenced by the sale of a yellow variation of the Schwinn Typhoon bicycle (dated from 1958) sold for $320 at NETTE Auctions on 27th April 2007, which had a pre-auction estimate of $300-900 and a starting bid of $150.

At the lower end, a blue Schwinn Typhoon bicycle auctioned for $190 at Midwest Auction Galleries, Inc. on 1st November 2009.
