Runaway winner at the Spirit of Whisky Fringe 2009

A Bruichladdich has won the award for the second time in three years

On August 15 and 16, at a former Catholic Apostolic church in Edinburgh, whisky lovers crowded to practice their religion.

200 whiskies had been set out in the Mansfield Traquail with the help of Royal Mile Whiskies, but the winner was clear: the Bruichladdich known as Port Charlotte PC8. Heavily peated, it is a remarkably precocious spirit, beating off competition from 20 and 30 year old whiskies at the tender age of eight.

It is the last release in the 6 tin Islay series.

The competition was won in 2007 by Bruichladdich 18 First Edition. Bruichladdich 18 second edition came a respectable second to the Balblair 1989 in 2008, and now the brand is the toast of Edinburgh once more.

Top ten:

  1. Port Charlotte PC8 2. Glenmorangie Signet 3. Black Bull 30 year old 4. An Cnoc 16 year old 5. Arran 1997 Peacock 6. Glenfarclas 30 year old 7. Edradour 1997 Chateauneuf du Pape 8. Gordon & Macphail Longmorn 1971 9. Bruichladdich Infinity 3rd Edition 10. Hazelburn 12 year old
