Rudyard Kipling's sister's ring makes $4,500 in family archive sale

The ring belonging to Rudyard Kipling's sister, Trix, led the auction at Ewbank's

A ring thought to have belonged to Rudyard Kipling's sister topped the sale of an archive pertaining to the family at Ewbank's in Surrey, UK on June 26.

The lot, which sold for 2,500 ($4,256), is made from unmarked gold and features three diamonds - the largest of which weighs in excess of one carat.

Kipling's sister, Trix, was institutionalised following a mental breakdown - an event covered in a letter to his brother-in law-John Fleming, which sold for 900 ($1,532).

"One must remember that the attack has now lasted barely three months and it has been taken in hand practically from the first, so one can begin to hope that another few weeks may see the turn in the malady," Kipling writes in 1911.
