Routemaster London bus auction makes $106,800 at Christie's

The iconic red London Routemaster bus was a star attraction at Christie's London Auction

An iconic red London Routemaster bus has sold for 67,250 at Christie's as the centrepiece of an auction devoted to the capital, smashing its high estimate by 124.2%.

The 1966 Routemaster arrived at today's (September 3) London Auction with a 20,000-30,000 estimate and is one of 150 lots celebrating "art and icons of the capital".

The result is evidence of the considerable hold these double deckers have over nostalgic collectors.

The original Routemasters, much-loved for their open rear platform and larger-than-life conductors, were phased out during the 1990s and 2000s, and now operate on just two heritage routes in London.

The sale is also featuring seven outfits worn by Britain's first female prime minister, Margaret Thatcher. Further results to follow shortly.
