Rock Island Auctions gun sale brings $3.8 million

Firearms specialists the Rock Island Auction Company concluded their most successful regional auction ever on Sunday (July 1), with a total result of $3.8 million.

The sale, which took place at the company’s auction facility in Rock Island, Illinois, featured close to 6,000 including weapons from Colt, Smith & Wesson, Browning, Winchester and Remington.

The auction was the latest in a series of regional sales which are generally aimed towards entry-level collectors, hunters and target shooters. And with all but one of the lots appearing with estimates under $10,000, it proved the perfect opportunity for beginners to add to their collections.

Topping the sale were numerous Winchester rifles, with several 1866 Lever Action models achieving the highest prices. These included a Winchester Third Model 1866 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine which brought $9,200 and a custom engraved rifle which sold for $8,050, with several others sold for prices between $4,000 - $7,000.

Other rifles to achieve notable prices included a Winchester Model 21 Standard Grade Double Barrel Shotgun which brought $5,750 and an engraved Winchester Model 1873 Lever Action Carbine which sold for $6,325.

Popular pistols included a Engraved Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver which sold for $6,900, a Colt Second Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver which brought $4,888 and a Colt First Generation Single Action Army Revolver customized by John Oberlies which sold for $3,450.

The company will now look ahead to its forthcoming Premier event, which features the Gateway Collection – described by Rock Island Auctions as “the most important single collection to ever come to market at one time”.
