RM to sell classic cars from the Aalholm Automobil Museum

The highly renowned classic car collection of the Danish Aalholm Automobil Museum is set to feature in an RM Auctions sale later this year.

The one-day auction, which will take place on the site of the former museum, will offer more than 175 vehicles spanning a century of automotive history.

“RM is honoured to have been selected to represent the Aalholm Automobile Collection at auction as we continue to build our reputation as the specialists for private and estate collections,” said Annette Abaci, RM Europe specialist and manager of the company’s German division. “Well-known by motoring enthusiasts across Europe, the Aalholm Collection comprises a wide range of marques and eras, presenting a diverse range of ownership opportunities. With many examples coming to the market for the first time in decades following long-term display in the museum, the sale presents a rare opportunity for collectors to acquire an important piece of Danish history.”

The museum was established in 1964 by Baron J.O. Raben-Levetzau, who founded the collection with a single car – a 1911 Rolls-Royce 40/50 hp Silver Ghost Roi des Belges Tourer. It operated until 2007, and offered a permanent exhibition featuring more than 200 historic vehicles on display.

The collection was regarded as one of the finest in Europe, and its many highlights will appear at the auctions. These include:

  • A 1938 Bugatti 57C Stelvio Drophead Coupe by Gangloff
  • An 1931 Bugatti Type 40A Tourer, one of just 32 examples ever built
  • A 1938 Maybach Zeppelin DS8 Roadster
  • A 1928 Mercedes-Benz Nürnburg Limousine
  • A 1932 Hispano-Suiza HS26 Cabriolet-Victoria
  • A 1900 De Dion-Bouton Four-Seat Vis á Vis

Every one of the cars will be offered ‘without reserve’ at the sale, which is set to take place against the backdrop of the medieval Aalholm Castle on Sunday August 12.

The estate sale follows on from a series of similar high-profile sales held by RM in recent years, including the private collections of Bernie Ecclestone, Hans-Günther Zach and Edgar Schermerhorn.
