The historic jersey is selling with a minimum bid of $100,000. Following the monumental game, Jackson became one of only four players in baseball history to hit three home runs in a World Series game, and was an easy choice for the season's Most Valuable Player award.

The 1977 World Series saw the Yankees pitched against the Dodgers, with slugger Reggie Jackson having a fine series through the first five games. The Yankees entered Game Six up three games to two, and Jackson soon homered three consecutive pitches from three different pitchers, easily taking the title.

According to the auction house, this is "the most historically significant game-worn baseball jersey of the modern era". Prior to the sale, it has been kept by Jackson himself as the centrepiece of his personal collection, and remains exactly as he wore it on the evening that earned him his nickname, Mr October.

Other memorabilia from Jackson's collection, including items from Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle, will join the jersey in the sale.

"I collected because I was a fan, and that stuff has turned into significant value. I've never sold anything except my stuff, because my stuff I guess is not as important to me as some of the other things I've collected," he told Bloomberg Radio.

In May 2012, Babe Ruth's earliest game-worn jersey set the world record for any item of sports memorabilia when it sold for $4.4m.
