Raymond Chandler Rare Books And Memorabilia are collectible items relating to the celebrated American detective fiction author Raymond Chandler.

Brief history/biography

Raymond Thornton Chandler was born on July 23rd, 1888 and died on March 26th, 1959. Chandler was a famous American detective fiction writer and screenwriter, and also wrote numerous short stories, anthologies, screenplays and magazine articles as well.

Some of his most notable novels include The Big Sleep (1939), Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The Lady in the Lake (1943), The Little Sister (1949), the Edgar Award-winning novel The Long Goodbye (1953) and Playback (1958).

Some of his famous crime short stories include "The Man Who Liked Dogs" (1936), "The Curtain" (1936), "Try the Girl (1937), "Mandarin's Jade" (1937), "Bay City Blues" (1938), "The Lady in the Lake (1939) and "No Crime in the Mountains" (1941).

Books

  • Sotheby's in New York sold a first edition copy of Farewell, My Lovely (1940) which was also signed and personally owned by Chandler for $28,800 in November of 2004, and a first American edition copy of The Long Goodbye (1954) which was also inscribed by Chandler for $15,600 in November of 2004.

Christie's in New York sold:

  • A first edition copy of The Lady in the Lake (1943) which was also inscribed by Chandler for $12,650 in December of 1996.
  • A first American edition copy of The Long Goodbye (1954) which was also inscribed by Chandler for $10,350 in December of 1996.
  • A first edition and Literary Association copy of Playback (1958) which was also inscribed by Chandler for $28,680 in October of 2002.

  • Swann Galleries, Inc. in New York sold a first edition copy of The Big Sleep (1939) for $10,000 in April of 2005.

  • PBA Galleries in San Francisco, California sold a first edition copy of The Big Sleep (1939) which was also inscribed by Chandler for $8,000 in October of 2008.

  • Sotheby's in London sold the first edition copy of Farewell, My Lovely (1940) which was also inscribed by Chandler for £6,600 in July of 2005, and a first edition copy of The Big Sleep (1939) for £6,600 in July of 2005.

  • Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas sold a first edition copy of The Big Sleep (1939) for $12,000 in September of 2011, and a first edition copy of Farewell, My Lovely (1940) for $6,750 in June of 2008.

Documents

  • Sotheby's in New York sold a typed letter which was written and signed by Chandler (circa 1957) for $5,700 in November of 2004.

Posters

Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas sold an Italian 2-folio movie poster for the film adaptation of The Big Sleep (1946) which featured the artwork of Italian artist Luigi Martinati for $6,500 in July of 2008.

Guide for collectors

First edition copies of Farewell, My Lovely (1940), The Lady in the Lake (1943) and The Big Sleep (1939) are considered to be the most valuable. Only 5,000 copies of the first edition of The Big Sleep were produced.

Books that were once owned by Chandler and/or signed by Chandler are also considered valuable.

Restoration of a first edition copy of one of Chandler's books is not recommended.
