Rare whisky dominates Glasgow auction

80 year old whisky becomes one of the most expensive ever to be sold

A bottle of Macallan Anniversary 50-year-old sold for 11,750 in Glasgow this week.

The sale of a well-aged Macallan can get collectors all over the world excited, and this was a typical example with the bottle going to a Californian businessman.

The whisky is a blend of 3 casks of Macallan whisky distilled between 1926 and 1928, but only bottled in 1978.

The sale still isn't close to the world record for a bottle of whisky, set in 2007 by another Macallan, a 60-year edition, distilled in 1926 which sold for a jaw-dropping 22,600.

The Old Homestead Steakhouse in Atlantic City, New Jersey will serve you this by the dram, though even then you might need another drink after paying the equivalent of 1960 for the privilege.

The world record for the sale of a miniature was broken recently, however, with a bottle of Springbank 1919 sold for 1,800.

You wouldn't have found that next to the Nessie postcards in an Inverness tourist shop.

It's a good time to invest in a good whisky, as if kept in good condition they'll hold their value - at least if you resist the urge to drink it!

Interest in whiskies is widespread, notably in Japan as well as America and the UK, whilst the market in Russian and India is growing exponentially.
