Rare Three Stooges Poster Headlines Heritage Auction

Last month's Vintage Movie Posters Signature Auction at Heritage saw excellent results for all genres, with a number of posters far exceeding their estimates. The sale's top lot was a rare Three Stooges one-sheet for their 1935 film 'Three Little Beers', which brought a price of $59,750.

Following on their heels was another one-sheet for a very different film - Greta Garbo's classic 1930 picture 'Anna Christie', in which audiences heard her voice for the first time. Placed up for sale with an estimated price of $5,000, the poster brought attention from several bidders before finally selling for $38,838.

Another 1930s screen siren, Marlene Dietrich, also performed well at the sale with a Style B one sheet for her 1935 film 'The Devil is a Woman' selling for $26,290. And a highly rare one-sheet for Alfred Hitchcock's film from the same year 'The 39 Steps' brought $17,925, with just one other copy having ever appeared for sale in the company's history.

Other notable results included the usual success for classic horror films, with a half-sheet for the 1932 film 'The Most Dangerous Game' selling for $31,070 and a 1931 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' window card bringing $16,133. There were also good results for later Hollywood films, with a 1961 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' one-sheet selling for $13,145.

In total the sale, which featured 1,472 lots, brought a total of $1.6 million with a 91.8% sell-through rate by value.
