One of the rarest Mickey Mouse items, an original cel and background, will sell

Paul Fraser Collectibles,Sunday 8June 2014

An original Mickey Mouse animation cel and background is the incredibly rare highlight of Heritage Auctions' Animation Art Signature Auction on July 1 in New York.

Very few Mickey Mouse production cels have survived the tests of time

The piece is from Walt Disney's 1935 classic Mickey's Service Station, which features Mickey and Goofy. It's estimated to sell for more than $60,000+, such is the enduring popularity of Disney memorabilia.

"The early Disney cartoons are some of the most difficult animation cels to find and it's even harder to find one with an original background," said Heritage's director of animation auction, Jim Lentz.

"Yet here we have one of the best I've ever seen, from one of the best early Mickey cartoons and one of the very last black and white Mickey cartoons, before Disney proved that colour worked in the medium."

The cel is further enhanced by being the only known black and white production cel to feature Goofy, a beloved Disney character.

Also set to excite Disney fans is a rare production drawing from Steamboat Willie, the cartoon that first made Mickey Mouse famous, followed by a cel of Mickey as the Sorcerer's Apprentice.

If Mickey's not your thing, Heritage also has a fantastic Donald Duck and Peter Pig production cel from The Wise Hen, which is one of the only known examples of Donald from the landmark cartoon.

We have a fantastic selection of animation and illustration art for sale, featuring Captain Pugwash, Bugs Bunny and the cast of Peanuts.
