Rare Hopi storage jug may see $120,000 at Bonhams

A rare Hopi storage jug comes to the market following a recent furore

A rare storage jug made by the Hopi people is to appear at Bonhams' June 3 auction of Native American Art in San Francisco.

The spectacular piece, decorated with eagle tail patterns and hooked wing motifs, is expected to sell for $80,000-120,000.

The sale follows the recent furore over the sale of Hopi "Kachina friends" - masks which are revered in Hopi culture as representations of dead ancestors and spirits. The tribe protested the sale, but it went ahead anyway, realising $1.2m.
