Rare Double Stamped Nickel Sells Breaks eBay Sales Record

A highly rare U.S five cent coin has become one of the most expensive items to ever sell on the auction site eBay. The 1916 Nickel was a 'Double Die Obverse' - a coin on which part of the design had accidentally been stamped twice during minting, creating an overlapping effect.

The obverse side of the coin, which features the bust of a Native American Indian (giving it the name 'Indian Head nickel), shows the date '1916' stamped twice. Coins with minting errors are highly popular with many collectors due to their rarity, and the coin broke all sales expectations when it sold for a final price of $23,850 at the end of the seven-day auction.
