Rare Casablanca six-sheet to headline Heritage's movie posters

The rare Casablanca six-sheet, one of only two known to exist, will sell on March 24

A fantastic Casablanca six-sheet is set to see fevered bidding as it headlines Heritage Auctions' Vintage Movie Poster Signature Auction, which is being held on March 23-24 in Dallas.

The restored poster for the 1942 film has not yet been given an estimate by the auction house, but can expect strong results after a smaller half-sheet was given a $60,000 pre-sale estimate in its July 2012 sale.

The large format six-sheet offered is one of only two known to exist and is in very fine condition. Mounted on linen, it has had some touch-ups to fold lines, centre-points and the outer edges, as well as some minor restoration to the lettering. Unlike many other posters of this age, it is not missing any paper and is almost completely in its original state.

The first United Artists Mickey Mouse one-sheet is also expected to command strong attention from collectors, with Heritage Auctions stating that it has never seen another like it and suspects it to be a unique example.

The 1932 poster is in very fine condition, though has two small punctures in the upper border that suggest it may have been a test copy. According to Heritage, "the lithographer would pull proofs and put them up on two pegs to inspect before refining the print".

It was released following Walt Disney's decision to sign with United Artists, after leaving Columbia Studios due to their frugality. This was to be the turning point in Disney's career, propelling him and his famous mouse to stardom and launching the franchise we know today.
